Kids' music lessons in Surabaya

Choosing music lessons for a child can feel confusing. Which instrument, from what age, and how do lessons work? Kara Music Academy teaches harp, violin, cello, piano, voice, drums, guitar and early-years music in Surabaya, Jakarta and online. This page answers those questions one by one.

Two paths, depending on age

  • Ages 0 to 3: Poco a Poco. Our early-years programme, taught in small group classes with a structured curriculum. For babies and toddlers, a group suits better than a private lesson. Read about Poco a Poco.
  • Ages 3 and up: private lessons. One student, one teacher, every week. The child learns one instrument with the teacher's full attention.

Which instrument suits your child?

As a rough guide, not a rule: children who love to sing often suit voice, active children who love rhythm often suit drums, and calm, careful children often suit a string instrument or the piano. At the trial lesson the teacher helps you see what fits. Not sure where to start? Try the instrument finder.

Why private, and why 30 minutes?

In a private lesson the whole half hour belongs to your child. The teacher corrects small habits before they become bad habits, and sets the pace by the child rather than by a class. For school-age children, 30 focused minutes a week plus short practice at home works better than a long session that tires them out.

Each student has a fixed weekly slot. All scheduling and payment goes through Kara admin, not directly to teachers, so the relationship between teacher and student stays about the music.

Behind the lessons

  • Teacher development. Kara's teachers are developed through class observation and induction, not simply left to teach.
  • Semester reports. You receive a written picture of your child's progress each semester.
  • A record of achievements. A student's accomplishments are kept in one portfolio.

How to start

  1. Book a trial lesson on WhatsApp.
  2. Your child tries the instrument while you watch.
  3. We recommend a teacher and schedule, and confirm them in writing before anything is agreed.
  4. If you enrol within 7 days, the trial fee is credited to your first month.

Enrolment carries a three-month minimum, because progress needs continuity.

How much do music lessons for children cost?

Fees depend on the instrument and on the teacher your child is matched with. We confirm the monthly fee in writing on WhatsApp before you enrol, so there are no surprises. If you enrol within 7 days of the trial, the trial fee is credited to your first month.

What if my child gets bored or it turns out not to suit them?

That is what the trial lesson is for. You and your child can try before committing. After enrolment there is a three-month minimum, and if you need to pause or stop afterwards, tell us two weeks before the end of the month.

My child is only 2. Can they join lessons?

For under-threes we recommend the Poco a Poco group class. Private lessons suit children once they are ready to sit and focus with a teacher.

Are online music lessons available?

Yes. Every instrument can be taught online, live and one-to-one.
