Two classes, matched to age
Babies and toddlers learn in different ways, so we separate the classes instead of mixing every age in one room.
- Baby, 0 to 18 months. For babies who are just getting to know sound, movement and the voices around them.
- Toddler, 18 months to 3 years. For toddlers who are starting to walk, talk and want to do things themselves.
Classes are 60 minutes, with 12 sessions per term and up to 6 children per class. Small classes mean every child is noticed.
Music, language and independence
Each session is designed to build three things at once.
- Music. Listening, singing, moving to rhythm and meeting the sounds of different instruments.
- Language. Songs, rhymes and repeated words help children catch the sounds and patterns of language.
- Independence. Children learn to wait for a turn, make choices and try things themselves with the right support.
Five traditions, not one brand
Poco a Poco draws on five respected traditions of early music education: Suzuki, Kodály, Orff, Dalcroze and Feierabend. Each has its strengths, and we take the best of each for ages 0 to 3. The design of the programme is aligned with the NAfME position statement on early childhood music education.
We are not certified in one branded method, and we say so plainly. Some schools sell a single licensed method. We combine traditions because different children respond in different ways.
The Term 1 curriculum
The first term is built on Ravel's Mother Goose, one movement for every two weeks of lessons. Each movement is paired with a piece by another composer: Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Saint-Saëns and Grieg. The term closes with The Nutcracker, with a live harp finale. Ask us on WhatsApp for the schedule of the next term.
After age 3
When a child is ready to sit and focus with a teacher, private lessons are the next step. Private lessons are 30 minutes, once a week, and your child can choose an instrument. Harp is where Kara began, and many Poco a Poco families go on to try it with a trial lesson.
