A warm, low voice
The cello is for people who are drawn to a deep, singing sound. It is played seated, with the instrument resting between the knees and the bow drawn across four strings. Like the violin, it has no frets, so the ear does as much work as the fingers.
How lessons build
- Sitting and holding. A relaxed posture, a steady hold on the cello and a comfortable bow grip.
- Open strings and bow control. A calm, even sound before the left hand begins.
- First notes and scales. Finding the notes by ear and placing the fingers accurately.
- Short pieces. Simple tunes played cleanly, then longer repertoire as the student grows.
Preparing at home
You do not need to buy anything before the trial. Practice matters between lessons, so ask the teacher what to use at home. The right size depends on your child's height and will change as they grow. Short, regular practice helps more than one long session.
Where to study
Cello lessons are taught at our studios and online. We confirm which teachers and slots are open for cello when you book on WhatsApp. If you are comparing string instruments, violin sits in the same classical programme.
